What is Matthew 6:21 about?
In Matthew 6:21, Jesus speaks to the deep connection between our hearts and our treasures. As Tim Keller would say, this verse reveals the profound truth that our priorities shape our affections, thoughts, and actions. Whatever we value most in life, whether it be material possessions, relationships, or accomplishments, becomes the center of our attention and focus.
The heart is used as a metaphor for the seat of our most basic orientation, our deepest commitments — what we trust the most (Proverbs 3:5; 23:26); it is what we most love and hope in, what we most treasure, what captures our imagination (Matthew 6:21). Every heart has an inclination (Genesis 6:5), something it is directed toward. The direction of the heart, then, controls everything — our thinking, feeling, and decisions and actions.
This truth highlights the importance of examining our hearts and priorities to ensure they are aligned with God's values. If we treasure earthly possessions and wealth above all else, we may become consumed by greed and selfishness. However, if we prioritize investing in things that have eternal value, such as good works and building a relationship with God, our hearts will be transformed to reflect the compassion and love of Christ.
Therefore, we must continually evaluate our treasures and seek to align them with God's values, placing our ultimate hope and treasure in heaven. As Keller would say, this means investing in the kingdom of God through acts of love and service, as these are the true treasures that will last for eternity.
